I'm an immigrant. I have no Native American blood in me, I have no Viking blood in me (Yes I believe they settled here before the Indians). I've got mostly Irish blood in me. My parents and their parents and their parents before them, etc... were born here, but my ancestors were not. There, that parts out of the way.
What America originally stood for was a chance at a new life, a given opportunity if you were willing to make sacrafice. You were given nothing, you started out with only what you had, and you either made yourself or you would break yourself. America has endured hardship after hardship, from the brutality of murder, to racism, to terrorism, we've surpassed it all and we will do so again. Nothing stopped on 9/11, nothing new began, so get out of that state of mind. It didn't wake up anything. Hell, years back Three Mile Island had the worst Nuclear Disaster in the history of America, how many of you remember or know about it to begin with? The Oklahoma Bombing, most people forgot about it until McVey was sentanced to die again. The milita groups that have been lying in wait across America, who act when they feel it is necessecary, whether it is just or not, how many of you pay attention to their doings? The Riots of Los Angeles, how many of you think about those at this moment in time? The Race War building in Cincinatti, Ohio, have any of you concentrated on what consequences this country may face because of that? The removal of the Rebel Flag in the south, how many of you knew it was going on? How many of you still care?
These are all major events in this country, and they each happened within the last few years. The scale of what happened on 9/11 is no larger than any of these. It became a media event that blew it out of proportion. Was it shocking? Yes. Was it wrong? Depends on who you talk to. Oh yes, there are many American's who do not think what took place was wrong. I for one think it was, but that's me. Will it stop life as we know it? Nope. Hasn't yet. Won't in the future either. Has it been over dramatized? God yes. Will our kids care about it? Probably not. That's life, it goes on. Things that one find important may not be important to another or to the next. Take racism for example... do I find it important? No. I've grown up with all different races, and I've got along with people from all different races. That and I suffer from being completely color blind, so you're all just a bunch of shades of gray!!! But was racism important to my parents? Yes. They grew up in the fifties and sixties when it was a major issue. The issue does still exist but not quite on the scale that it once did. Anyway, the point of all of this is, you're focusing on one major disaster and not bothering to look at all the other major disasters that have happened in this country. 9/11 may be important, but so was every other damned event that took place in this country. Don't overshadow everything else just because one things hogging the spotlight.

I was born in this country and that makes me a native. It does not matter if I can trace my parents back a hundred generations, I was born here and that is all that maters.
Our sence of safty and sanity was murdered on 9/11. Our belief that nothing can happen to us, that most Americans share, stoped with the first case of Anthrax.
Our daily lives are altered. Many will not go to ball games or other places where people gather in large numbers anymore. Some people are wearing latex gloves to open their male. The govonor of Arkanasas is considiring banning tric-or-treating and canceling Haloween completely.
My father, who fought in Vietnam and saw atrocities undescribably, is now terrified of what is coming. The hospital where my mother works is preparing for a major bio-chemical attack. Doctors are stockpiling small pox vaccines for their families and themselves.
Where I grew up in Mississippi there is a network of Spill Ways. These are places where small dams are set up to prevent flooding of farm land and generate electricity. They are a tourist manget because of the fishing, the locals spend a large amount of time there because of the beauty of the area. All of these dams that play a vital part of the economy of the area as well as the place that I went for peace whenever things became hectic in my life, are closed. Indefinately. Possibly permanetly. The news has not covered this story.
Things have changed and they will never be the same. Our children and grandchildren are going to understand the safty and freedom that we grew up with about as well as we understand segregation in schools and the fear of the draft. Just something before my time that no longer exists.
